Start with the problem

Nobody types arts based learning. People type the thing that hurts.

So this site is filed under the problem rather than the method. Each question below is one an HR head, a principal, a placement officer or a funder has actually asked us, in their own words. Each has one honest answer, its name in a budget line, the programme that addresses it, and what we do not claim.

The problem, its name in a budget line, and the answer.

The twelve questions.

01

Psychological safety. Speak up culture. Trust in teams.

Why does nobody on my team speak up, disagree or admit a mistake?

Because it has not been safe to, and no announcement has changed that. What is missing is psychological safety: the shared belief that offering an unfinished idea, disagreeing with a senior or admitting an error will not be punished. It is learned from what happened last time somebody tried, so it cannot be installed by a policy. A team can practise it in a single day by making something together in which errors are instant, audible and repaired without blame.

02

Leader and manager development. Leadership presence. Executive communication.

We promoted our best people into management and now they cannot hold a room. What helps?

Presence is a craft with a technique, and the technique can be taught. Somebody promoted for being good at the work has never been asked to hold attention, tell a story people can use, or make a room in which people speak up. That is a performer's work, and it is practised in the body and the voice before it is practised in a script. A three day residential does exactly that, and its result is read by the manager's own team a month later.

03

Innovation capability. Creative problem solving. Ideas that survive contact with the business.

Why do our ideation sessions produce a wall of sticky notes and nothing else?

Because the room was never safe enough to offer a bad idea out loud, and nothing was ever tested. Sticky notes are what a group produces when it is managing risk instead of making. Ideation that transfers runs the whole cycle several times in two days: generate, take the idea apart, build something, test it in front of a real audience, discard it cheaply, start again. By the end most groups have abandoned more ideas than they kept, and that is the part that transfers.

04

Cross functional collaboration. Belonging. Breaking the barrier between teams.

Hybrid work has left us in silos. How do we get people across functions talking again?

Silos are what happens when the informal room disappears. Hybrid work removed the corridor, the canteen and the ten minutes before a meeting, and no channel replaces them. What rebuilds trust across functions is doing something together that has no agenda, no function and an audible consequence when somebody stops listening. Singing does that faster than any other shared activity that has been tested against it, and it does it for a whole floor in a day.

05

Culture and values activation. Living the values. Employer brand.

Everyone can recite our values and nobody feels them. How do you activate values?

A value that is announced arrives already discounted. A value that a team has had to put into a line that scans, and then sing in front of colleagues, has been argued over, agreed and felt. Values activation is not a poster, a town hall or a screensaver. It is the moment a group has to decide, in its own words, what is actually true about how it works, and some things a company cannot say to itself.

06

Re engagement. Burnout prevention. Recovery after a long run.

Our people are exhausted by continuous change. What does recovery actually look like?

Recovery is a category of its own, separate from learning and separate from a party. The research names what it needs: detachment from work, relaxation, a sense of mastery at something, and control over how the time is spent. An evening designed around those four does something a dinner does not, and it does it for a hundred people at once. Change keeps failing not because people resist it but because nobody put any recovery in it.

07

Wellbeing. Learning and development. Engagement.

We bought a wellbeing app nobody opens. What sits between that and clinical care?

A third space. Skill training builds competence and ignores how people are. Clinical care and wellness apps have real evidence behind them and reach almost nobody who is not already unwell. Around 56 percent of adults are neither ill nor flourishing, and nothing is built for them. Artfulness is: learning and wellbeing produced by one mechanism, delivered non clinically, bought as capability building and measured in the language of learning and development.

08

Learning effectiveness. Behaviour change. Training transfer.

Why does training evaporate by Monday, and how would we know if anything changed?

Because most training transfers information, and information is the part people forget. Doing beats listening across 225 controlled studies in the most conservative subjects there are, and generating an answer beats receiving one across hundreds more. What stays is what the body did. As for knowing: measure behaviour at thirty days rather than satisfaction at five o'clock, agree the behaviours before the day, and let your own managers do the rating rather than the supplier.

09

Teacher continuing professional development. Art integrated learning. NEP 2020 implementation.

Our teachers have been asked to teach through art with no training in it. What does that CPD look like?

It looks like a day in which teachers learn the pedagogy by undergoing it. NEP 2020 makes art integrated and experiential learning standard pedagogy across subjects, and CBSE asks every teacher in an affiliated school for fifty hours of professional development a year, twenty five of them open. Only 29 percent of teachers say they feel prepared. A teacher who has spent a day inside the method has something to teach from on Monday. A teacher who has watched a presentation about it has a handout.

10

Placement readiness. Employability skills. Communication and collaboration.

Our students cannot present, collaborate or improvise. What does placement readiness actually need?

It needs practice under conditions nobody specified in advance, which is what a syllabus has never been shaped to produce. Employers name creative thinking and socio emotional skills among the fastest rising requirements to 2030. A degree certifies what a student knows. The interview and the viva test what a student can do in a room with other people, and that is a performer's skill, learnable in days rather than semesters.

11

Livelihoods. Skilling. CSR. Cultural programming.

We fund skilled artists who have no livelihood. What does an artist skilling programme look like?

It looks like a residential cohort in which twenty five artists ideate, prototype and present products built out of their own practice, in front of peers and the body that funds them. An artist spends years achieving proficiency, and proficiency seldom creates a livelihood on its own. The bridge between the art and an enterprise can be practised, and it is practised the way any idea is: made, tested, discarded, made again.

12

Learning and development, not events. Capability building, not the annual day.

Is Artfulness a team building activity?

No, and the difference is worth naming honestly. A team building activity entertains a team for ninety minutes and is bought by whoever organises the annual day. A day of Artfulness changes what a team can do afterwards, is bought as learning and development, and is measured at thirty days. If what you need is the first, there are good suppliers of it and we are not one. If you are not sure which you need, that is the most useful conversation we can have.

If your problem is not here.

It probably is, under a different name. Tell us what is going on in the room, in whatever words you would use to a colleague, and we will say honestly whether a session addresses it and which one. If it does not, we will say that too.
